As I look into my crystal ball of marketing, I foresee that I’ll be adding more videos to my marketing mix this year. Anyone who’s ever dealt with videos knows that they’re both a storage hog and a bandwidth hog. I have been using an online service that both stores my media and provides a web site player for both audios and videos. However, I’m tired of paying a monthly recurring fee and started to explore other options.
That’s when I went back to check out Amazon S3 (Simple Storage Service). Amazon S3 provides a simple web services interface that can be used to store and retrieve any amount of data, at any time, from anywhere on the web. It gives any online business owner access to the same highly scalable, reliable, secure, fast, inexpensive infrastructure that Amazon uses to run its own global network of web sites. The service aims to maximize benefits of scale and to pass those benefits on to its users.
While incredibly inexpensive, Amazon S3 is not for the faint of heart. It has taken me a bit of time to figure out how to use it and make it do what I needed it to do. However, with the aid of some online tutorials and the handy little Firefox S3 Organizer plug-in, which I reviewed previously, uploading audio and video is now a breeze. Now my monthly media storage bill is averaging $1.50 instead of $19. In the coming weeks I’ll be reviewing a great video playing software that integrates with the S3 service, as well as an audio playing software.
