Tools to Help Your Biz
The first tool I want to tell you about this week is a WP plugin, WP Site Shield. This plugin is designed to hide details pertaining to your WordPress site, hide your plugins, hide the theme you’re using, and hide your admin and login URL’s from malicious people and snooping auto-scanning software that targets WordPress sites.
Hacking the login URLs of these WP logins, which on most sites are sitename.com/wp-admin or sitename.com/login, are the most common ways that hackers can access your site. One of my sites was hacked several years ago using this vulnerability, and they were able to redirect this site to one about Chinese porn, believe it or not!
In addition to all that, you can install and activate two free “add-on” plugins to additionally protect your site.
One of them closes an “author loophole” that exists where a hacker or malicious person can easily find out your admin username — all they have to do is look in the right place.
The second plugin prevents a certain type of injection attack where a hacker can send emails like password resets to themselves, get into your site, and wreck it.
The plugin is super easy to use and works straight out of the box.
Check a few boxes and you’re good to go.
The second tool is a membership course platform that I have purchased to replace the one I’m using with Teachable called Heights Platform. While I love the Teachable platform, I don’t love paying a monthly fee for it, so anytime I can find a comparable service with a one-time fee like I can often due through an AppSumo deal, I always check that out.
This platform seems to be comparable with what I have through Teachable, with the exception being video hosting. The AppSumo deal doesn’t include hosting of any videos you upload to the platform. That is an add-on for which you pay $9/month for $108/year versus the $468/year I’m currently paying to Teachable. That’s a win for me!
