Since I maintain my own web sites and do that for my clients, as well, I often need to know the size of an area, graphic, sidebar, etc. I would often resort to holding a wooden ruler up to my computer screen (I know, so old school!), but oftentimes that wouldn’t help me. Fortunately, I found a great virtual tool to replace my wooden ruler.
Pixel Ruler is a free Windows tool that gives you the exact size and position of any element. It features horizontal and vertical orientation and dynamic mouse measurement tracking in pixels. With it, you can accurately measure selected onscreen views in pixels, which helps when configuring image formats, creating graphics, and scaling images. It shows measurements in pixels up to 2,500 pixels in width or 1,500 pixels in height.
The interface consists only of these rulers — there are no navigation buttons or other controls. This tool is extremely easy to use. Pixel Ruler floats above the desktop and can be dragged and dropped anywhere on the screen. To use the application, just left-click and drag to move ruler around the screen. You can double left-click to change orientation, and right-click to close the application.
