Being in the business that I’m in often means that my colleagues and competitors often promote themselves with the lure of living a very rich life (lots of money, expensive cars, owning McMansions, exotic vacations) in which you work only a few hours per week. In some cases, these wild claims are probably actually true. However, I’m not yet rolling in the dough, so I have to show up at my office for several hours a day to work both in and on my business.
Having an online business in my home provides me with a great lifestyle and income, even though it’s pretty normal by all standards. I have a 5-second commute to my office <g>, can go into the office when I choose to do so, work only with the clients with whom I enjoy working, and pick and choose my next projects. I can take off or take vacation time whenever I desire, without having to be subjected to asking permission or being forced to take off only during undesirable times because I have low seniority in my workgroup and others get the prime vacation picks. I never have to worry about overspending for my work wardrobe or paying for parking or eating lunch out too many days per week. To paraphrase the Mastercard commercials, I find these perks to be priceless..:)
It’s not all a bed of roses ( just ask me about health insurance issues for the self-employed!), but given the options of working for myself or working for someone else, I’d rather choose my own job security and remain my own boss.
I hope you’re getting as much, if not more, from your entrepreneurial lifestyle!
